Case Study: Kee Line & Kee Walk Installation at Birmingham Rail Depot

Unlike Phase 1, where access conditions were more conventional, the Phase 2 site was surrounded by hard-standing concrete used to support plant, machinery, and delivery operations. This ruled out the use of temporary scaffolding, which is typically employed for safe rooftop access during installation.

Additionally, the project was subject to a fast-track construction schedule, requiring close collaboration, quick design revisions, and precise execution to ensure safety measures were in place ahead of other roofing works.

1. Enabling Works – Kee Line Fall Arrest System

Due to the absence of temporary edge protection, Safesite first installed a Kee Line fall arrest system. This allowed operatives to work safely on the roof during the subsequent installation of the Kee Walk with Guardrail system.

• Provided personal fall arrest protection during initial works.
• Enabled compliant, safe rooftop access for installers in the early stages of the build.

2. Kee Walk with Guardrail System

Once the fall arrest system was in place, we installed a comprehensive Kee Walk with Guardrail system along the roof perimeter.

Designed to provide collective fall protection for operatives working on or accessing rooftop areas.

Additional Kee Walk-only sections were installed to:

• Provide safe access to new mechanical ventilation units.
• Connect with the existing apex walkway installed during Phase 1.

3. Customisation & Site-Specific Design

We worked from the Engineering’s in-house designs, incorporating multiple design revisions during planning.

Key customisations included:

• Yellow nosing added to step transitions on the walkway, at the client’s request. These provide increased visibility and reduce the risk of trips, especially in low light or poor weather.
• All components were designed to withstand exposure to the elements, with a focus on long-term safety and performance.
