Case Study: Kee Klamp Guardrail Installation for Southampton Airport

The project presented several unique challenges:

• The contractor required a permanent, fixed guardrail solution suitable for the layout of the new building.
• Architectural drawings and sectional details revealed an unusual roof construction, requiring design adaptations for the guardrail system to fit safely and securely.
• During the project planning phase, Southampton Airport introduced a new requirement for night-time working to reduce noise disturbance during operational hours.

Our team needed to develop a flexible, site-specific solution that met safety standards while accommodating the evolving needs of the client and site conditions.

After reviewing the supplied plans and details, we proposed the use of the Kee Klamp Guardrail System - a modular, highly adaptable solution ideal for complex roof layouts.

Design Adaptations:

• Additional brace arms were incorporated into the Kee Klamp design to provide extra stability, addressing the challenges posed by the roof’s construction.
• Brace arms were installed on the inside of the guardrail at the client’s specific request, ensuring full operational flexibility for contractors working within the protected area.

Installation Planning:

• We worked closely with the contractor to revise the project schedule, adapting to the airport’s operational requirement for night-time installations to minimise disruption.
• The Kee Klamp system’s modular design allowed for a faster installation process compared to traditional fabricated handrails, helping us meet project deadlines efficiently.

Pre-Mechanical Installation:

• The guardrail was installed prior to the mechanical and electrical equipment being positioned, providing a safe working environment for subsequent installation teams.
