The Project & Background

Safesite was invited to attend a commercial building site following a direct enquiry from a project team acting on behalf of the building owners. The request was to assess the roof and provide a quotation for the installation of full perimeter edge protection.

The building roof was experiencing ongoing leaks and also contained extensive solar panel installations that required annual maintenance. However, at the time of enquiry, the roof had no edge protection or man-safe systems in place, meaning safe access could not be granted. As a result, maintenance works were unable to proceed until a compliant fall protection solution was installed.

Recognising the urgency of the situation, Safesite arranged a site visit within two days of the initial phone call to assess the roof layout, identify hazards, and determine the most suitable safety solution.

The Challenge

During the site survey, Safesite identified a significant challenge relating to the layout of the solar panels. In several areas of the roof, wind guards installed on the solar panels were positioned very close to the roof edge.

This created a number of constraints:

  • Standard positioning for a Kee Guard edge protection system was restricted.
  • The available roof space was too narrow to accommodate cantilever tube systems.
  • Any solution would need to avoid interfering with the solar installation while still providing full perimeter protection.

To overcome this challenge, Safesite proposed a collaborative approach involving the original solar installation contractor to explore possible modifications that would allow a compliant safety system to be installed.

The Solution

The client required a free-standing roof edge protection system that would not penetrate the roof surface while still providing full collective fall protection.

Safesite worked closely with the solar installation company to modify the existing wind guards fitted to the solar panels. These adjustments created the necessary clearance to install the Kee Guard Free-Standing Guard Rail System without affecting the operation of the solar panels.

The Kee Guard system was installed across the roof perimeter, providing continuous edge protection while preserving the integrity of both the roof structure and the solar equipment.
