Safesite was approached by a construction contractor requiring an urgent solution to improve roof light protection and provide safe access to an Automatic Opening Vent (AOV).
The client needed a system that would allow maintenance teams and subcontractors to access the roof area safely while reducing the risk of falls around the AOV. Just as importantly, the solution needed to be delivered quickly because the client already had pre-arranged works in place and could not afford unnecessary delays to the programme.
Due to the urgency of the enquiry, Safesite carried out a remote survey to assess the requirements and determine the most suitable fall protection solution. This allowed the project to progress quickly without waiting for a conventional site survey.
Following the assessment, Safesite recommended a Kee Dome system with a self-closing gate, providing collective protection around the hazardous roof opening while maintaining practical access to the AOV.

Speed was one of the most important requirements of the project.
Following receipt of the enquiry, Safesite reviewed the available site information remotely and developed a suitable proposal without delaying the client's wider programme.
A full proposal and quotation were issued the day after the initial enquiry, allowing the client to review the recommended solution immediately. Instruction to proceed was received straight away, and Safesite was able to agree an installation date for the following week.
This rapid response meant the client could continue with its planned programme of works while ensuring the required roof safety measures were introduced without unnecessary disruption.
Safesite recommended the installation of a Kee Dome collective protection system incorporating a self-closing safety gate.
The system was selected because it provides a practical and reliable way of protecting hazardous roof openings while still allowing authorised users to gain access when required.
Kee Dome offered several important benefits for this application. Its freestanding design meant the system could be installed without penetrating the roof surface, helping preserve the integrity of the existing roof construction.
The system also provides collective fall protection, meaning maintenance personnel and subcontractors can benefit from protection without relying solely on individual fall arrest equipment.
For this project, the self-closing gate provided an additional level of safety by maintaining protection around the access point when users entered or left the area.
The self-closing gate formed an important part of the final design.
The gate is spring-loaded, allowing it to automatically return to the closed position after a user passes through. This helps prevent the access opening from being unintentionally left exposed and supports a safer working environment for everyone accessing the roof.
The system can also be adapted to suit different opening dimensions. A single gate can be adjusted on site where required, while wider openings can be accommodated using a double-gate arrangement.
This flexibility made the Kee Dome system particularly well suited to the client's requirement for safe and controlled access to the AOV.
Following immediate approval from the client, Safesite mobilised quickly and completed the installation the following week.
The modular nature of the Kee Dome system allowed the works to be carried out efficiently with little or no disturbance to the client's ongoing activities.
The non-penetrative design also helped simplify installation while avoiding unnecessary interference with the existing roof surface.
By maintaining close communication with the client throughout the process, Safesite ensured the works were completed in line with the required programme and without delaying the wider project.
The completed installation provided the client with a safe and practical solution for accessing the AOV while protecting maintenance teams and subcontractors from the surrounding fall hazard.
Key benefits included:
The fast turnaround was particularly important to the client. From the initial enquiry through to quotation, approval and installation, Safesite was able to move rapidly and help keep the wider programme of works on schedule.
Following completion, the client highlighted their satisfaction with the swift response and efficient installation.
This project demonstrates Safesite's ability to deliver rapid, tailored fall protection solutions where roof openings, AOVs and access requirements create additional working-at-height risks.
By combining remote assessment, fast technical support and an efficient Kee Dome installation, Safesite provided the client with a practical collective protection system without disrupting their pre-arranged works.
