When you have a safety system installed on your roof, or on the roof of a building you manage, you might feel you’ve done your bit for health and safety. Time to sit back and enjoy the peace of mind, right? Not quite.
Meeting your health and safety responsibilities goes far beyond just putting the right system in place. No matter what system you choose, whether it is a lifeline, anchor point or guardrail, its protection will not be absolute and permanent.
According to health and safety legislation, you must continue to ensure that these systems can be used safely by anyone who might need them, whether that is training, supervision, or - vitally - ongoing maintenance and recertification.
You should always inspect your systems before use for signs of wear and tear or failure. For lifelines, this could be looking for wear along the lanyard, or checking whether the system has been accidentally discharged.
However, it is a legal requirement that you get your systems inspected and fully recertified regularly by a competent third party. As a rule, you should look to get your systems professionally inspected once a year, more if the system is used regularly.
Getting safety systems inspected and recertified regularly is vital part of keeping the people who access your roof safe. Failing to meet your responsibilities can lead to a heavy fine, or worse, an even heavier conscience, if a fall were to happen.
Regular self inspection is hugely important, but it is not enough to ensure your workers and anyone accessing your roof is kept safe from harm. Professional recertification is vital to remain compliant with standards such as BS7883, EN365, EN795 and Work at Height Reg 12.
